Hydraulic hoses are exposed to two temperature concerns: internal liquid temperature and external working temperature. As a result, hoses are rated for performance in terms of both temperatures, with a maximum and minimum functioning temperature rating. Exceeding these ratings can result in severely reduced working life or even failure, so it is pertinent to use a hose that is properly rated to both the liquid temperature and the environment temperature.
Will the selected hose meet bend radius requirements? This refers to the minimum bend radius (usually in inches) that a hydraulic hose must meet. Exceeding this bend radius (using a radius smaller than recommended) is likely to injure the hose reinforcement and reduce hose life.
Route high-pressure hydraulic lines parallel to machine contours whenever possible. This practice can help save money by reducing line lengths and minimizing the number of hard-angle, flow-restricting bends. Such routing also can protect lines from external damage and promote easier servicing.
A number of industry standards exist which set requirements for the construction and performance of hydraulic hoses used for different applications. Organizations that provide hose standards include SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), EN (European Norm), DIN (Deutsche Institute fur Normung), and ISO (International Standards Organization). Specific standards for hydraulic hose include SAE J517 and EN 856.
Hydraulic hoses are not permanent. A variety of factors can impact the lifespan of a hydraulic hose. Flexing the hose too much, twisting it, kinking, stretching, crushing or scratching the surface can reduce hose life. Too low or too high operating temperatures will break down hoses as will sudden sharp rises or drops in internal pressures. Using the wrong size, type or weight of hoses can also cause hoses to break down. Hoses should be replaced before they fail, especially with hydraulic heavy machinery, brakes or safety critical hydraulic machinery. Hoses show swelling, cracking, blisters and bubbles when worn or may show virtually no signs at all. Replace hoses as often as recommended by the manufacturer to prevent accidents.
